The Pittsburgh Penguins were dealt a significant blow to their playoff aspirations on Thursday with the announcement that winger Jake Guentzel will be sidelined due to an undisclosed injury, landing him on injured reserve for an estimated four weeks.
Guentzel, a key component of the Penguins’ top line alongside Sidney Crosby, has been enjoying a stellar season. He ranks second on the team in goals with 22 while also leading in assists (30) and points (52).
The absence of Guentzel for the next four weeks translates to missing approximately 14 games, further complicating Pittsburgh’s bid for a postseason berth.
Presently trailing the Detroit Red Wings by seven points for the final playoff position in the Eastern Conference, the Penguins have endured three consecutive losses in regulation, exacerbating the challenge ahead. Guentzel’s absence amplifies the already dim outlook on the team’s playoff prospects.
Throughout the season, Pittsburgh has heavily relied on its top six forwards, with Guentzel standing out as one of the most impactful. His absence is bound to exacerbate the struggles of the team’s power play, which has been lackluster.
With Guentzel slated to return on March 7, just a day prior to the NHL trade deadline, the situation presents a compelling dilemma for general manager Kyle Dubas.
As an impending unrestricted free agent this summer, Guentzel’s future with the Penguins could be in jeopardy if the team’s playoff hopes continue to dwindle, potentially leading to a change of jersey for him on March 8.
