Utah quarterback Cam Rising will miss the rest of the season due to a lower leg injury, and coach Kyle Whittingham announced on Monday that true freshman Isaac Wilson will be the Utes’ starting quarterback until further notice.

Rising was injured during Utah’s 27-19 loss to Arizona State on Friday when his leg bent backward awkwardly after a hit during the Utes’ first drive. Although he finished the game, he had trouble moving and was not very accurate, completing only 43% of his passes and throwing three interceptions against the Sun Devils.

This season, Rising has already missed three games because of an injury to his throwing hand. He also sat out the entire 2023 season after suffering a serious knee injury in the 2023 Rose Bowl.

On Monday evening, Utah released a statement from Whittingham confirming that Rising will be out for the rest of the 2024 season.

“During his time at Utah, Cam has been both a great player and leader for our program, and he will obviously be missed,” Whittingham said in the statement. “Any future developments concerning his collegiate eligibility will be addressed at a later date.”

Wilson, who is the younger brother of Denver Broncos quarterback Zach Wilson, stepped in for Rising during his previous absence. He had a 2-1 record as a starter, throwing for 726 yards, five touchdowns, and five interceptions.

“We feel like the quarterback position is stable. We just don’t have Cam,” Whittingham said at his weekly press conference earlier on Monday.

Whittingham also mentioned that Rising might consider an eighth season if he decides to apply for a medical waiver after this season.
