Colorado Avalanche forward Valeri Nichushkin will be absent for the rest of the playoffs due to a suspension. This is not the first time he’s been sidelined this season.
The 29-year-old Russian has been placed in stage 3 of the league’s player assistance program, which means he violated its terms. This program offers support for various needs, from mental health to substance abuse.
Nichushkin’s suspension will last at least six months without pay, ruling him out for the remainder of the postseason and likely the start of next season. The announcement came just an hour before the Avalanche faced the Dallas Stars in Game 4 of their series, which they lost 5-1. This defeat puts them in a tough position, trailing the series 3-1.
The specific issues that Nichushkin is facing haven’t been made public. Last spring, during a playoff series against Seattle, he unexpectedly left the team and missed the last five games.
Avalanche coach Jared Bednar expressed concern for Nichushkin, acknowledging the impact on the team but emphasizing the need to focus on moving forward and playing better.
When asked if Nichushkin may have disappointed the team, Bednar chose not to speculate, stating his priority is Nichushkin’s well-being and happiness, whether he remains with the team or not. He hopes Nichushkin can find peace and receive the support he needs.
