Linebacker Lavonte David is set to embark on his 13th season with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, as per a source informed ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler, agreeing to a lucrative one-year contract worth $9 million.
Reportedly, the contract carries a maximum potential value of $10 million, reflecting the significance of David’s role within the team.
David’s return marks another key retention for the Buccaneers, who have also secured deals with star wide receiver Mike Evans and starting quarterback Baker Mayfield.
Following the expiration of his previous contract in 2022, David rejoined the Bucs on a one-year agreement valued at $7 million. In the preceding season, he showcased his value by leading the team with 134 tackles, including 17 tackles for a loss, along with 4.5 sacks, a forced fumble, and 5 pass breakups.
Remarkably, in the 2023 season, David stood out as the sole NFL player to accumulate over 100 tackles, more than 15 tackles for a loss, and at least 3 sacks. His 17 tackles for loss notably ranked as the second-highest in a single season by a player aged 33 or older since the inception of this statistic in 2008, trailing only J.J. Watt’s 18 in 2022.
Moreover, David’s remarkable career statistics include 1,035 solo tackles, the highest in the league since 2012 and the 11th highest since the NFL began tracking this metric in 1994. His 18 fumble recoveries stand as the most since 2012, with his 28 forced fumbles ranking fourth overall.
Selected by the Buccaneers in the second round of the 2012 draft, David has been a cornerstone of the team, serving as a team captain for 10 consecutive seasons. His 181 regular-season appearances rank second in franchise history, surpassed only by Pro Football Hall of Famer Ronde Barber’s 208.
David’s 11,863 defensive snaps represent a franchise record, solidifying his enduring impact on the team. Notably, he leads the franchise in forced fumbles with 28 and fumble recoveries with 18.
