Tears streamed down the face of Brazil’s Vinícius Júnior during Monday’s press conference as he bravely acknowledged a diminishing desire to play due to the racist abuse he has endured in Spain.
Despite enduring racist taunts from opposing fans throughout his five-year tenure at Real Madrid, the forward expressed his commitment to remaining in LaLiga, emphasizing his refusal to let the racists dictate his future.
“Over the years, witnessing and experiencing this, my enthusiasm dwindles,” Vinícius lamented. “Each instance of discrimination leaves me feeling increasingly disheartened. Yet, I must face this situation head-on and stand before you today.”
Seeking support from various football governing bodies including UEFA, FIFA, CONMEBOL, and CBF, Vinícius underscored the urgency to combat racism, highlighting the absence of legal repercussions for such acts in Spain.
Addressing the media ahead of Brazil’s international friendly against Spain, Vinícius emphasized his belief in Spain’s inherent non-racist character but acknowledged the prevalence of racism within football stadiums. He urged for collective efforts to educate and eradicate racism, emphasizing the need for personal responsibility in fostering change.
Vinícius, a vocal advocate against racism, played a pivotal role in the enactment of the Vinícius Júnior law in Brazil aimed at combating racism in sports.
“While football remains significant, the fight against racism takes precedence,” Vinícius asserted. “Let people of color lead normal lives. My sole desire is to continue playing while advocating for equality and normalcy.”
Expressing his resilience amidst adversity, Vinícius called for a shift in media focus, urging reporters to prioritize pertinent issues over scrutinizing his on-field performance. He implored for understanding and empathy, emphasizing his ongoing personal growth and studies.
Despite LaLiga’s efforts to address racism through legal channels, Vinícius expressed frustration over the lack of effective consequences for perpetrators, noting the arrests made by Spanish authorities.
With a contract at Real Madrid until 2027, Vinícius remains steadfast in his determination to continue playing in Spain, refusing to succumb to the desires of racists.
Brazilian coach Dorival Júnior echoed Vinícius’s sentiments, condemning the ongoing discrimination and advocating for decisive actions by Spanish courts.
The Spanish government’s establishment of a permanent committee to combat violence, racism, and intolerance in sports was highlighted, emphasizing the collective responsibility in fostering a culture of respect and inclusion within football.
