The Golden State Warriors have announced that they have signed star guard Stephen Curry to a one-year contract extension, worth $62.6 million. This new deal will keep Curry with the Warriors through the 2026-27 season. The extension highlights Curry’s continuing importance to the team and secures his future with the franchise he has been with throughout his NBA career.
With this extension, Curry will join an exclusive group of NBA players who have earned over $500 million in their careers, alongside LeBron James, Paul George, and Kevin Durant. Curry’s previous contract, which was a four-year deal worth $215.4 million signed in August 2021, still had two years remaining.
However, due to the NBA’s over-38 rule, which limits contract length for players nearing 38 years old, Curry was only eligible for a one-year extension this offseason.
Curry, who is now 36, has consistently expressed his desire to remain with the Warriors and retire with the team. He has previously stated that he wants to be a “Warrior for life” but also emphasized the importance of staying competitive. He was clear about his reluctance to stay with a struggling team, although he believes that the Warriors are not facing such a situation.
The Warriors have been focused on maximizing Curry’s remaining years by retooling their roster. The team believes that as long as Curry is on their side, they have a strong chance of success. General Manager Mike Dunleavy had expressed confidence in securing Curry for a few more years and was prepared to offer him whatever was necessary to keep him with the team.
As the Warriors move into a new era, they will do so without Klay Thompson, who joined the Dallas Mavericks after 13 seasons with Golden State. The team will now rely more on young players like Jonathan Kuminga, Brandin Podziemski, and Trayce Jackson-Davis, while also integrating new additions such as Buddy Hield, Kyle Anderson, and De’Anthony Melton.
Curry’s impressive career includes being a 10-time All-Star, a two-time MVP, a Finals MVP, and an Olympic gold medalist, and he has played a pivotal role in the Warriors’ four NBA championships.
