Logan Webb bounced back after a tough start in his latest impressive outing at Truist Park, helping the San Francisco Giants defeat Charlie Morton and the Atlanta Braves 4-2 on Thursday night.
Matt Chapman’s home run in the fourth inning put the Giants ahead in a three-run burst, and he later added an RBI double in the sixth. San Francisco clinched the series by winning two out of three games against the Braves, marking their third straight series victory.
Webb (7-6) surrendered two runs in the opening inning but then settled down, delivering six scoreless innings to extend his perfect record to 3-0 in five career starts in Atlanta.
“It’s an amazing atmosphere, an amazing stadium,” Webb commented, he allowed two runs over seven innings.
“I felt like I got into a groove,” Webb acknowledged, though he admitted frustration with his early-game struggles. Coming into the game, his ERA of 4.50 in the first inning contrasted sharply with his season ERA of 3.12.
“I need to figure something out about those first innings,” Webb said. “I can’t keep giving up two or three runs every first inning.”
Camilo Doval closed the game with a scoreless ninth inning for his 16th save of the season, including two in this series. After Marcell Ozuna’s leadoff infield hit in the ninth, Doval struck out Matt Olson and Adam Duvall to seal the win.
After their early scoring burst, the Braves couldn’t muster more than one hit in any inning.
“Our offense has to step up,” catcher Sean Murphy remarked. “We didn’t bring in the runs we needed.” Morton (5-5) pitched 5 1/3 innings, allowing four runs, three of them earned.
Heliot Ramos tied the game with a two-run homer to center field in the fourth inning. Chapman then put the Giants ahead with his 12th homer of the season, a solo shot off Morton with one out.
Chapman capped his productive night with an RBI double in the sixth inning for the Giants, who have won seven of their last ten games.
The Braves initially took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Ozzie Albies’ double and a throwing error by right fielder Mike Yastrzemski, which allowed Jerred Kelenic to score from first base. Austin Riley’s sacrifice fly brought in Albies.
