Jordan Westburg hit a decisive two-run homer in the ninth inning, lifting the Baltimore Orioles to a 6-4 win over the Kansas City Royals on Monday night.
Westburg’s homer struck to the opposite field, and broke the tie on a 0-2 pitch from Nick Anderson after the Royals managed to equalize in the top of the ninth. “I wasn’t aiming for anything special, just wanted to make good contact and advance the game,” said Westburg.
It was a special moment for Westburg, marking his first walk-off hit in his baseball career, especially meaningful as it happened in Baltimore. Ryan Mountcastle contributed with a home run and three RBIs for the Orioles.
Bobby Witt Jr. and Salvador Perez also homered for the Royals, continuing their strong performances from the previous game.
In the eighth inning, Gunnar Henderson and Adley Rutschman singled to put runners at the corners for Mountcastle, whose infield single brought in a run. However, the Royals fought back in the top of the ninth, tying the game.
Westburg’s heroics in the bottom of the ninth secured the victory for the Orioles, leading to celebrations on the field.
Making his debut for the Royals after signing a contract in December, Michael Wacha pitched five innings, allowing three runs. Orioles starter Dean Kremer also pitched well, giving up three runs in 5 1/3 innings.
Witt and Perez provided early offense for the Royals with their home runs, but the Orioles responded strongly to level the score. “It’s disappointing to lose the lead after our hitters did a great job putting runs on the board,” commented Wacha on the game.
