The ongoing saga between Tee Higgins and the Cincinnati Bengals has reached a new chapter. According to NFL Network Insider Ian Rapoport, the wide receiver, who was franchise-tagged by the Bengals, has now formally requested a trade from the team.

Despite the Bengals expressing their desire to retain the 25-year-old receiver and their willingness to negotiate a contract extension, Rapoport revealed that no progress has been made in long-term contract discussions. With talks at a standstill, Higgins has made it clear that he wants to explore other opportunities.

The Bengals officially applied the franchise tag to Higgins on February 26, offering him a one-year tender worth approximately $21.8 million for the 2024 season. Both parties have until July 15 to reach a new long-term agreement, unless a trade is arranged before then.

Higgins faced challenges during the previous season, missing five games due to injuries and posting the lowest statistical output of his four-year career, with 42 receptions for 656 yards and five touchdowns.

Despite battling through injuries, Higgins still led the Bengals with an average of 15.6 yards per catch and delivered a standout performance with 140 receiving yards in a game against the Steelers in Week 16, even with backup quarterback Jake Browning under center.

Throughout his 58 career games, with 53 starts, Higgins has accumulated 257 receptions for 3,684 yards and 24 touchdowns, showcasing his importance to the Bengals’ offense.
