Dalton Knecht has become the main story for the Los Angeles Lakers over the past week, as the rookie has emerged as one of their top scoring options.

Even with stars like LeBron James and Anthony Davis on the team, Knecht has managed to stand out, making head coach JJ Redick give him more playing time. Knecht, known for being one of the best shooters in his draft class, made a big impact in the Lakers’ recent victory over the Utah Jazz, hitting nine 3-pointers and setting a career-high with 37 points.

His increased role has come due to injuries, especially Rui Hachimura’s absence. Hachimura has missed the last three games but is expected to return soon. Because of this, Redick was asked if he would consider keeping Knecht in the starting lineup once Hachimura is back.

“Sure, there’s consideration,” Redick said before Thursday’s game against the Orlando Magic. “But there’s also consideration about what that does to the group. We’ve certainly had conversations about what it might look like when Rui is back in the lineup.

“I would say right now there’s no definitive decision. My expectation is that Rui would stay in the starting lineup. He’s been awesome for us and I think for the group, whatever role, as a starter, and I know I talked about that not being a ‘role’ but whatever designation Dalton has, whether he’s coming off the bench or as a starter, I don’t think his role changes at all.

I think for him mentally, there’s no affect to that. He’s just gonna be the same guy. As a coaching staff, we have to be just cognizant of getting him longer stretches on the court.”

Even though the Lakers lost to the Magic, the starters benefited from Knecht’s presence as a floor spacer, although his defensive weaknesses were noticeable.

Redick ended up using players like Cam Reddish and Max Christie in the closing moments, which could suggest that Knecht might be more effective coming off the bench while Hachimura provides more defensive resistance against bigger players.

No matter what his role is, Knecht is lucky to be with the Lakers and will continue to play an important part going forward.

Austin Reaves is one teammate who has been watching Knecht for a while. Reaves, who saw Knecht play at Tennessee, has supported him now that they’re on the same team.

The two have built a strong relationship, and Knecht shared how much he values Reaves’ confidence in him.
