Wisconsin quarterback Tyler Van Dyke has a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) and will not play for the rest of the season, according to someone who knows about the situation.
This person talked to the Associated Press on the condition of anonymity because Wisconsin has not yet announced the full details of the injury. Van Dyke injured his right knee during Wisconsin’s 42-10 loss to No. 4 Alabama on Saturday.
The Wisconsin State Journal was the first to report that Van Dyke would be out for the season. ESPN was the first to report that the injury is a torn ACL.
Van Dyke hurt his knee while running a third-down play during the game’s first series. He grabbed his right knee, was taken to the injury tent on the sideline, and then carted off the field with his head down. He had a knee brace on and used crutches on the sideline during the second half.
Van Dyke’s injury occurs during Wisconsin’s off week before their Big Ten games start on September 28 at No. 11 Southern California.
Braedyn Locke replaced the injured Van Dyke against Alabama and completed 13 of 26 passes for 125 yards and one touchdown. He also fumbled twice, but Wisconsin recovered both fumbles. Locke had also started three games last season when Tanner Mordecai was injured.
Last year, Locke completed 50% of his passes (76 of 152) for 777 yards with five touchdowns and one interception. His previous starts included a 25-21 win at Illinois, a 24-10 loss at home to Ohio State, and a 20-14 loss at Indiana.
Van Dyke was in his first year at Wisconsin after transferring from Miami. He had completed 63.2% of his passes for 422 yards with one touchdown and no interceptions this season.
For his career, Van Dyke has completed 63.7% of his passes for 7,900 yards with 55 touchdowns and 23 interceptions. He was named the Atlantic Coast Conference rookie of the year in 2021.
