Xavi Hernández shared that he reversed his decision to leave Barcelona after being convinced by his players that they have the potential to succeed, even if they won’t win any trophies this season.
“Many people, including my players, have shown me that there’s still hope,” Xavi expressed during a press conference.
Xavi spoke the day after reaching an agreement with Barcelona to stay beyond this season, contrary to his earlier plan to leave. He’s now committed to honoring his contract until June 2025.
According to Xavi, the team’s improved performance played a significant role in his decision, along with his belief in his capabilities.
He emphasized his dedication to the team and club, noting that while he initially thought they needed a fresh approach, he now believes they can achieve success.
Xavi clarified that his decision wasn’t influenced by money, stressing that he wouldn’t have asked for payment if he had chosen to leave before his contract ended.
The choice to stay came after a defeat to Real Madrid that dashed their trophy hopes, leaving them trailing by 11 points in the league with six games left. Additionally, Barcelona was knocked out of the Champions League by Paris Saint-Germain.
However, Barcelona has shown improvement since Xavi’s initial announcement to leave, enjoying a 13-game unbeaten streak before their loss to PSG.
“I don’t think my time here is done, and I’m confident we can achieve success. These past three months have shown me that,” Xavi stated. “Changing one’s mind is a sign of wisdom, and I’ve decided to do just that.”
