Xavier Edwards became the second Miami player to hit for the cycle, but the Marlins lost 6-2 to the Milwaukee Brewers on Sunday. Jake Bauers helped the Brewers with a homer and a triple.
Devin Williams, a two-time NL reliever of the year, pitched a scoreless ninth inning for Milwaukee. He allowed a hit and a walk in his first game of the season after being out with stress fractures in his back.
“It’s like riding a bike,” Williams said. “I’ve done it a million times. Got right back on there.”
Edwards started the game with his first career homer, hit a double in the fifth, and tripled in the seventh. Needing a single to complete the cycle, the rookie got an infield hit with two outs in the ninth. He ended up 4 for 4 with a walk.
The only other Marlins player to hit for the cycle was Luis Arráez, who did it against Philadelphia on April 11, 2023.
“It means a lot,” Edwards said. “I don’t think it’s really set in yet, but it’s pretty cool that I got my first homer to start the game and got to cap it off with a single. I would have been pretty upset with myself if I didn’t hit a single. I usually get a lot of singles.”
The Brewers, who lead the NL Central, avoided a three-game sweep by the Marlins, who have the second-worst record in the NL. The Brewers have only been swept once this season, June 3-5 at Philadelphia.
Jackson Chourio hit a homer, and Brice Turang went 2 for 4 with two run-saving catches for the Brewers.
On the first two pitches of the game, Edwards homered to right field, and Bryan De La Cruz doubled to left field off Milwaukee’s Tobias Myers. Edwards’ first career homer came in his 185th plate appearance.
Myers settled down after that, striking out five while allowing three hits, one walk, and one run in four innings. Jakob Junis (4-0) pitched two scoreless innings in relief.
