Xavier Edwards achieved the first three-triple game in Major League Baseball since 2014, while Jonah Bride hit two home runs, helping the Miami Marlins defeat the Toronto Blue Jays 15-5 on Friday night.

Edwards hit his first triple in the second inning with a sharp grounder down the right-field line, then added another in the fourth with a fly ball to right-center.

His third triple came in the seventh with a line drive that bounced off the wall in right. He became the first Marlins player to hit three triples in a game, finishing with four hits, four RBIs, and two runs scored.

“I was confident in all three of them,” Edwards said. “I didn’t hesitate.”

During the game, the Marlins announced that manager Skip Schumaker would miss the final two games due to a family medical issue. Bench coach Luis Urueta will take over for the weekend.

Schumaker shared the news of his absence with the players in an “emotional” meeting after batting practice. Marlins slugger Jake Burger praised Schumaker, calling him “one of the best in the biz.” Schumaker’s contract is set to expire at the end of the season.

“He helped with a lot of stuff, not only on the field but off the field,” Burger said.

Edwards expressed gratitude to Schumaker for giving him his first chance at regular playing time.

“Great person, great manager, great baseball mind,” Edwards said. “I love playing for Skip.”

Marlins outfielder Griffin Conine also homered against the team that drafted him in 2018 and had three RBIs. Bride hit a two-run homer in the first inning and a solo shot in the eighth, marking the first multi-homer game of his career.

Burger contributed three hits and two RBIs, while Jesús Sánchez scored three times as the Marlins tallied 17 hits, including one against position player Tyler Heineman in the ninth inning.

Adam Oller (2-4) came into the game with an 0-3 record and a 6.43 ERA in four starts in September but broke his losing streak by giving up four runs and eight hits in five innings. He walked two batters and struck out three.

The Marlins arrived at their hotel in Toronto after 5 a.m. EDT due to a 13-inning victory against Minnesota on Thursday night, but they showed no signs of tiredness against the Blue Jays.

Sánchez started the scoring with an RBI double off José Berríos in the first inning, and Bride followed with a home run to left field.

Edwards added a two-run triple in the second inning, making the score 5-0, and Sánchez scored on a wild pitch in the third.

“I think we’re all running off a lot of adrenaline tonight,” Edwards said.

Berríos (16-11) gave up six runs and six hits in three innings during his last start of the season. This was as many runs as he had allowed in his previous five starts combined. The right-hander lost his second straight game after winning the previous seven.

“Frustrating that that’s his last outing for the year,” said Blue Jays manager John Schneider. “Tonight he just didn’t really have his stuff.”

Ernie Clement hit a home run for Toronto, marking his 12th of the season. The Blue Jays fell to 7-15 in September.

Vladimir Guerrero Jr. went 2 for 4 with an RBI. He has 199 hits, which is the second-highest total in the majors behind Kansas City’s Bobby Witt Jr.
