Mike Yastrzemski hit a home run and brought in four runs, while Blake Snell struck out eight batters over five innings. The San Francisco Giants defeated the Milwaukee Brewers 13-2 on Wednesday night.
Jerar Encarnacion also homered and had three RBIs, and Tyler Fitzgerald and Patrick Bailey each collected three hits.
“Just good at-bats across the board,” said manager Bob Melvin. “We put some pressure on the Brewers, had some big hits. (Going) 7 for 15 with runners in scoring position makes a big difference.”
The Giants started strong against Brewers starter Colin Rea (12-5), scoring four runs in each of the first two innings. In the first inning, a passed ball by Brewers catcher William Contreras allowed the first run to score.
LaMonte Wade Jr. added an RBI single, and then Encarnacion hit a rare opposite-field home run to right, putting the Giants up 4-0.
Encarnacion’s home run was the 75th opposite-field homer by a right-handed hitter at Oracle Park and the first by a Giant this season.
“I thought it had a chance to go because that’s where most of my power is,” Encarnacion said through interpreter Erwin Higueros. “When I saw it leave, I knew it had a chance to go.”
In the second inning, the first four Giants batters got hits, leading to four more runs. Fitzgerald had an RBI double, and Yastrzemski followed with a three-run homer. Yastrzemski added his fourth RBI in the fourth inning with another extra-base hit. Matt Chapman also homered later in the inning, extending the lead to 10-1.
Melvin praised Yastrzemski’s recent performance.
“It’s impressive to watch,” Melvin said. “And he prepares himself to play every day. At this time of year, sometimes you get a little run down, but he’s been fantastic recently.”
San Francisco added two more runs in the ninth inning against position player Jake Bauers.
Snell (3-3) allowed one run and four hits, earning his first home win as a Giant. The reigning NL Cy Young Award winner bounced back after a short outing in his previous start.
