Logan Webb pitched six innings without allowing any runs, and Mike Yastrzemski hit a two-run home run as the San Francisco Giants defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 4-1 on Wednesday night to prevent a three-game sweep.
Webb (4-4) limited the Dodgers to three hits, striking out five and walking three to help the Giants break a six-game losing streak against their rivals.
“We felt disappointed about how we played in the first two games,” Webb said. “I sensed that. We all sensed that. I just wanted to give it my all out there. Fortunately, it turned out well.”
The right-hander received assistance from his defense in the fourth inning when center-fielder Luis Matos jumped and reached over the wall to prevent Teoscar Hernández from hitting a home run.
“I didn’t think he would catch it off the bat,” Giants manager Bob Melvin said. “Sometimes it’s hard to predict the wind here and whether a ball will carry or not. That catch required a perfect route. You just throw your hand up at the end and hope it goes into your glove.”
Yastrzemski hit a home run off Los Angeles starter Elieser Hernández in the third inning for his fourth home run of the season.
Heliot Ramos contributed with an RBI double in the sixth inning to extend the lead to 3-0.
Hernández (0-1) allowed three runs and four hits in six innings, striking out three and walking one in his debut for the Dodgers. The right-hander’s contract was selected from Triple-A Oklahoma City earlier on Wednesday.
