Zach Eflin has provided a much-needed boost to Baltimore’s struggling rotation.
Since joining the Orioles from Tampa Bay before the trade deadline, Eflin has delivered four strong starts in a row, winning each one. His latest performance was a six-inning outing in a 5-1 win over Boston on Thursday night, where he struck out a season-high eight batters.
“You’re kind of forced to be comfortable this late in the season, especially in the middle of a pennant chase,” Eflin said. “Baseball never stops, so you’ve got to come in ready to go.”
The Orioles made several additions at the trade deadline, focusing on their pitching staff. While starter Trevor Rogers and reliever Gregory Soto have had some difficulties, Eflin and reliever Seranthony Domínguez have been strong contributors.
Eflin has a 2.13 ERA since joining the Orioles and is under team control for next year as well, making him an attractive trade target.
“He’s just such a pro,” Baltimore manager Brandon Hyde said.
“He’s pitched in World Series games, so he’s been in high-pressure situations before. He’s got a real easy way about him and is really likeable. It doesn’t seem like there’s a ton of stress out there.”
Eflin pitched in the World Series with Philadelphia in 2022. At age 30, he brings valuable experience compared to many Orioles players. The Baltimore rotation has been hit hard by injuries, with Kyle Bradish, John Means, and Tyler Wells all out for the season, and right-hander Grayson Rodriguez also on the injured list with a lat issue.
While ace Corbin Burnes is still a key player, the recent strong starts from Eflin and Dean Kremer have been a positive sign. Like Eflin, Kremer also allowed just one run in six innings during a win on Wednesday night.
“Everybody has been so welcoming, so great,” Eflin said. “It’s a really fun team to be a part of, so that’s definitely helped a lot.”
