The NBA Slam Dunk Contest has seen a decline in excitement over the years, but one prominent player is eager to revitalize it.
New Orleans Pelicans standout Zion Williamson expressed interest in participating in the annual event, albeit with a condition.
“I have to do my part and make the All-Star Game,” Williamson stated following the Pelicans’ 138–98 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Tuesday. “If I’m in the All-Star Game, I’ll do the dunk contest. But if not, I’m not doing it.”
Williamson has earned All-Star honors twice in his five-year career, in 2020-21 and again in 2022-23. Despite averaging 22.1 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 5.1 assists in 30.6 minutes per game, he fell short of selection this year.
The dunk contest has lacked star power lately. G League player Mac McClung is the current back-to-back champion, but he has appeared in just four NBA games.
In 2024, Boston Celtics’ Jaylen Brown participated in the dunk contest, finishing second. However, the overall impact of the event was underwhelming.
While the dunk contest may never reach its previous heights, having dynamic athletes like Williamson involved would undoubtedly elevate its appeal.
