The Cincinnati Bengals have had a rough start to the 2023 NFL season, having lost their opening two encounters before emerging victorious against the Los Angeles Rams.
The Bengals are now bolstered by the return of quarterback Joe Burrow from a calf injury.
Burrow has gained the reputation of healing quickly after injuries, but his latest injury is different from the ones that plagued him earlier in his career.
Burrow, who has recovered from appendicitis and a torn ACL, is now coming back from a soft tissue injury to his calf, which is unchartered territory for both the player and the Bengals.
There is no fixed deadline for his return to full fitness, which is a cause for concern.
Soft tissue injuries need specialized care and treatment as they bring with them the chances of reinjury, which may hamper the Bengals in the long run if they rush Burrow’s return.
A Glimmer Of Hope
Speaking after the game on Monday, Burrow said, “We’re getting there. Every week will be better as long as there are no more setbacks.”
Having come off an injury, Burrow’s on-field performances still weren’t at the level he displayed at the Pro Bowl, but there were glimpses of it in the third quarter against a resolute Rams defense.
Burrow managed to complete an out-cut pass through a tight space, a difficult pass on the third down, as a play-action rollout, which led to a 43-yard completion by Chase.
The Bengals have games against the Titans and Cardinals. Both teams have shifted their rosters over the trade window, which may help in easing Burrow into full fitness.
The Bengals will be hoping to have a fully fit Burrow by mid-October and will be working towards the same.
Burrow’s Strength and Attitude
Bengals coach Zac Taylor spoke highly of Burrow’s attitude and toughness while acknowledging the skills Burrow brings that have led to the success of the Bengals in recent times.
Burrow, the younger brother of former Nebraska linebackers, brings with him the never-say-die attitude that his hometown is renowned for.
The Bengals franchise and fans will be hopeful for a fully fit Burrow to lead them to the title in the 2023 season.
