The Cowboys and 49ers are preparing for a tantalizing rematch reminiscent of their previous playoff showdowns.
Interestingly, Trey Lance, who previously donned the 49ers jersey, will now face his former team as a Cowboy. Although he may not participate in the game, his experience with San Francisco has made him a valuable asset.
Dallas offensive coordinator Brian Schottenheimer stated,
“Trey knows a little bit about what they’re doing,” as reported by NBC Sports Bay Area. Schottenheimer further added, “The cool thing is, like I said, the [Cowboys] know them well, I know them well from being in Seattle, Trey knows them well.”
While the addition of Lance to the Cowboys was noteworthy, Schottenheimer doesn’t believe former players always bring an edge. Citing last week’s game against the Patriots, he highlighted how even with inside information from Ezekiel Elliott and Will Grier, former Cowboys, the game’s outcome wasn’t solely dependent on that. Dallas still emerged triumphant, beating New England by an impressive 35 points.
Yet, having intimate knowledge about an opponent doesn’t guarantee victory. Schottenheimer mentioned,
“We can know exactly what they’re going to do, because they don’t do too much, and they’re still really, really tough to go against just because they’re so talented.” He further stated, “We’ll definitely talk to Trey. He knows a lot of the pieces going against them in practice, but it doesn’t always help, as we learned yesterday.”
This match is also significant as it’s the first regular-season encounter between the Cowboys and 49ers since 2020. Both teams, currently top contenders for the Super Bowl, promise an enthralling face-off.
