It’s now official: Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray is set to make his return this Sunday against the Atlanta Falcons, putting an end to his 11-month hiatus due to an ACL injury. Coach Jonathan Gannon confirmed the news on Friday, quashing any uncertainties surrounding Murray’s status.
Expressing his enthusiasm, Gannon remarked, “Honestly, I’m excited for the guy. I’ve witnessed what he’s endured over the last eight months or so – however long I’ve been here – and the dedication he’s invested, highlighting his strong desire to be back on the field and his competitive spirit. He’s eager to join his teammates and contribute to the team’s success, and that’s what excites me the most.”
Murray suffered a torn ACL in his right knee on December 12 during the Cardinals’ third offensive play in a “Monday Night Football” matchup against the New England Patriots. Following surgery on January 4, he missed all of the Cardinals’ offseason activities and began the season on the physically unable-to-perform list. The team activated him to the 53-man roster on Tuesday after opening his practice window on October 18.
This Sunday’s game will mark precisely 11 months since Murray’s injury. Despite Arizona’s 1-12 record since his absence, Gannon believes in Murray’s ability to uplift his teammates. “I think that’s what they’re excited about. They’re looking forward to having him in the huddle, too, you know? They appreciate the guy. We all have a lot of respect for him, and that’s probably why there’s a bit of excitement and smiles all around,” Gannon added.
