New York Jets quarterback Aaron Rodgers, who captured the attention of the sports world with his ambitious bid to return from Achilles surgery faster than any NFL player in history, indicated on Tuesday that he will not be taking the field again this season. However, Rodgers expressed his intention to play in 2024 and beyond.
In an optimistic appearance on “The Pat McAfee Show,” Rodgers stated that returning for a playoff game would have been “an absolute no-brainer” if the Jets (5-9) were still in contention. Unfortunately, the team’s elimination from postseason play on Sunday solidified Rodgers’ decision not to return this season.
Acknowledging the unrealistic expectation of being 100 percent medically cleared during the regular season after his surgery on September 13, Rodgers emphasized his willingness to take the risk if the Jets were playoff contenders. With the closure of his 21-day practice window on Wednesday, Rodgers, at 40 years old, faces remaining on injured reserve for the final three weeks if not activated.
Despite the slim chance of making the playoffs, Rodgers mentioned that he would have attempted 11-on-11 practice reps this week to test his surgically repaired Achilles if the Jets had kept their playoff hopes alive. However, the fear of re-rupture and the need to “check all the boxes” for medical clearance prompted his decision to sit out the rest of the season.
Looking ahead, Rodgers confirmed his desire to play beyond 2024, expressing confidence in playing into his 40s. Reflecting on the current season as a “lost year,” he expressed eagerness to be a starting quarterback at 40 and beyond, emphasizing his commitment to the Jets despite the challenges faced this year.
During his appearance, Rodgers turned his attention to the future, offering a positive outlook for the Jets in 2024. He praised coach Robert Saleh, general manager Joe Douglas, and offensive coordinator Nathaniel Hackett, defending them amid criticism for the team’s struggles. Rodgers’ endorsements hold weight within the organization, and he emphasized belief in the current leadership, describing the team’s situation as a reload rather than a rebuild. He commended Douglas for great drafts, said Saleh was a fantastic coach, and expressed confidence in Hackett’s quarterback-friendly offensive system tailored to his abilities.
