Former USA striker Charlie Davies has advised Matt Turner that his decision to depart Arsenal for Nottingham Forest may have been a misstep. Turner’s move from the Gunners to Forest occurred last summer in a £10 million transfer.
Seeking more playing time following a challenging stint at the Emirates, where he made only seven appearances, the American goalkeeper made the switch. However, Turner’s performances at the City Ground this season have raised doubts, marked by noticeable errors and a sense of unease as his team contends with relegation.
Davies weighed in on Turner’s move, underscoring the contrasting levels of quality between the two Premier League clubs. He remarked (via TBR Football):
“In hindsight, leaving Arsenal for Nottingham Forest may not have been the wisest decision. Looking back, departing a club in the Champions League and vying for the Premier League title to join Forest, where the standard drops significantly, exposes you to criticism for many issues due to a weaker defensive line.”
Despite making 18 appearances across competitions this season and recording three clean sheets, Turner finds himself at Forest, who currently sit 16th in the league, just four points above the relegation zone after 21 matches.
Nonetheless, Turner would have faced stiff competition to secure a spot in Mikel Arteta’s starting lineup at Arsenal. The arrival of fellow Spaniard David Raya from Brentford saw him supplant Aaron Ramsdale as the Gunners’ new No.1 goalkeeper.
