Paul Merson suggests that the Arsenal managerial position holds more allure than Barcelona following rumors linking Mikel Arteta with the Spanish club.
Barcelona’s current coach, Xavi, recently announced his departure from Camp Nou at the end of the season, citing the need for change. This development fueled speculation that Arteta might be a potential replacement. However, Arteta has refuted these rumors.
Merson shared his thoughts on the matter, stating in his Sky Sports column:
“Mikel has dismissed the rumors, and we have to take his word for it. The landscape of football has evolved, and now, in my view, Arsenal presents a more attractive option than Barcelona. In the past, every footballer and manager dreamt of being associated with Real Madrid or Barcelona. It was the pinnacle of one’s career.”
He continued:
“However, Barcelona’s standing in European football has diminished. They are no longer a dominant force and lag in the title race. Their recent heavy defeat against Villarreal highlights their struggles.”
Merson concluded:
“Considering their financial issues and current squad, Barcelona doesn’t seem like a progressive step. Working with Arsenal’s squad appears more appealing given the circumstances.”
