The announcement of Alexander Zverev’s inclusion in Team Europe for this year’s Laver Cup surfaced on Thursday (February 8), sparking disappointment among fans on social media.
Zverev kicked off his 2024 ATP tour season with a strong performance, reaching the semifinals at the Australian Open last month. However, his Melbourne success was overshadowed by off-court controversies, including accusations of physical abuse and damaging a woman’s health during an argument in early 2020.
Facing a court trial for these allegations in late May, Zverev’s past troubles resurfaced. Notably, he had previously faced accusations of physical and emotional abuse by his ex-girlfriend Olga Sharapova three years ago.
Sharypova’s accounts included incidents such as Zverev allegedly punching her in the face during the 2019 Laver Cup in Geneva, Switzerland.
The revelation of these incidents left many fans dismayed at Zverev’s participation in the exhibition event. One fan, citing the assault in 2019, criticized Laver Cup officials for inviting Zverev back, stating that they should feel ashamed for calling him to the event despite the accusations.
