Boris Becker and Holger Rune recently announced their split, surprising fans and tennis enthusiasts alike, especially considering their relatively short-lived partnership. Mark Petchey, a former tennis player, expressed his bewilderment at the decision, describing it as “bizarre” during a recent appearance on the Tennis Channel Inside-In podcast.
Petchey elaborated on his confusion, noting that the duo hadn’t spent enough time together to truly evaluate the effectiveness of their collaboration. He pointed out that Boris Becker’s inability to travel to Australia for unspecified reasons further complicated matters.
“It’s just bizarre, I mean, it’s, you know, to get those guys on board, that’s not enough time,” Petchey remarked. “I mean, Boris Becker couldn’t even travel to Australia for known reasons.”
Petchey also expressed skepticism about the explanation that lack of time was a factor in their decision to part ways, dismissing it as a “myth.” He suggested that the real issue lay in the fact that their partnership simply didn’t yield the desired results and that Rune needed to reassess his coaching setup.
“For me, I don’t understand. It certainly wasn’t time, Let’s be honest. That was absolutely. You know, that was a myth, you know, whatever that mirage was that they said they didn’t have the time. Yeah. The fact was it? It hasn’t worked and Holger Rune needs to figure it out,” Petchey concluded.
