The Houston Rockets organization confirmed Reid’s death, expressing deep sorrow over the loss of the former player who played a vital role in the team’s historic achievements.
Matt Young of the Houston Chronicle reported that Reid succumbed to cancer after a remarkable career spanning 13 seasons in the NBA.
His association with the Rockets began in 1977 when the team drafted the 6’8″ forward from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio with a second-round pick. Reid spent the first decade of his professional career with the Rockets, showcasing his talent and commitment to the team’s success.
The pinnacle of Reid’s career came during the 1980-81 season when he delivered standout performances, finishing third in scoring, second in rebounds, and leading in steals for the Rockets.
Despite entering the playoffs with a modest 40-42 record, the team embarked on a memorable underdog journey to the NBA Finals. They overcame formidable opponents like the defending champions, Los Angeles Lakers, led by Magic Johnson and Kareem Abdul-Jabbar.
In the NBA Finals, facing Larry Bird and the Boston Celtics, Reid’s prowess was evident as he emerged as a top scorer in Game 1. Although the Rockets eventually fell short against the heavily favored Celtics, Reid’s contributions were instrumental in the team’s remarkable playoff run.
