The ongoing feud between Jamie Carragher and Rio Ferdinand has escalated further, with Carragher taking a jab at the former United defender off-air at the CBS Studios.
Last year, the feud became public when Carragher referred to Ferdinand as a clown during a CBS Sports broadcast. “I think anyone out there who is watching the replay and seeing what VAR do and still believe that is a penalty, they must be a clown,” Carragher said.
“But as a defender, we have to stick together, don’t we? And I just felt people were getting a little bit carried away.” Carragher’s comment was prompted by Micah Richards, who encouraged him to name names.
“Rio Ferdinand. I’m happy to call him a clown!” Carragher responded. Both Carragher and Ferdinand cover the Champions League for different broadcasters, with Ferdinand working for TNT and Carragher for CBS alongside Micah Richards, Thierry Henry, and Kate Abdo.
During a recent broadcast, Richards filmed a conversation with Carragher about all-time defenders while the show was off-air. “Rio, JT, Sol Campbell, Tony Adams?” Richards asked Carragher.
“JT can play alongside him, I’ll have that he’ll be next on my list,” Carragher replied.
Richards then pressed Carragher about Ferdinand. “What about Rio, What about your mate?” Richards chuckled.
Carragher took the opportunity to throw shade at Ferdinand once again. “Rio? He’s a poor man’s Virgil Van Dijk,” Carragher claimed. While being compared to Virgil Van Dijk isn’t a slight, Carragher’s comment adds fuel to the ongoing feud between the two pundits.
