Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, Holger Rune, and other participants slated for the 2024 Mexican Open have been cautioned against freely navigating Acapulco due to the elevated risk of criminal activity.

Scheduled to commence on Monday, February 26, the ATP 500 event in Acapulco will feature top players like Tsitsipas, Zverev, de Minaur, Fritz, Ruud, and Tiafoe. However, concerns have been raised about their safety during the tournament. Mexican tennis authorities have issued advisories to players, their teams, and the ATP, highlighting potential risks associated with crime and infrastructure challenges in Acapulco.

As reported by British publication i, Tsitsipas, Zverev, and their peers have been instructed to limit their movements to the tournament grounds and designated host hotel, utilizing only authorized transportation provided by the event organizers.

These precautions follow the extensive damage inflicted by Hurricane Otis, a Category 5 storm that struck Acapulco in October of the previous year, severely impacting the city’s infrastructure. Additionally, concerns over “high amounts of crime” in certain areas have prompted heightened vigilance.

Despite these obstacles, the ATP remains optimistic about the tournament’s success, expressing confidence that it will meet the necessary standards. Tournament organizers have reassured participants that both the Arena GNP, the tournament venue, and the host hotel are fully operational and adequately equipped to accommodate the ATP 500 event.

“The Arena GNP, the venue for the Mexican Open of Tennis, and the host hotel are currently operational to carry out the tournament. Since Tuesday, we have been receiving players in Acapulco, and they have already had the opportunity to train at the venue,” the organizers confirmed to i.
