Stefanos Tsitsipas has expressed his astonishment at the extensive devastation caused by Hurricane Otis in Acapulco.
Last October, Hurricane Otis, categorized as a Category 5 storm, wrought havoc in Acapulco, resulting in numerous fatalities and billions of dollars in damages. It was later confirmed as the costliest tropical cyclone ever to hit Mexico in recorded history.
Speaking from the Mexican Open currently underway in Acapulco, Tsitsipas shared his firsthand observations of the aftermath of the hurricane. He expressed disbelief at the extent of destruction and expressed hope that the ATP 500 event could bring some solace to the city’s residents.
“I was taken aback. I hadn’t anticipated the city to be in such a state. There were many ruins and unexpected sights that I witnessed, which were quite disturbing, given the city’s recent challenges,” he remarked (via Tennis TV).
“Seeing it firsthand made me realize the severity of the situation, and it’s truly unfortunate what transpired here. But I hope that through tennis, we can offer support and contribute positively to the community, raising funds and uniting people for a noble cause,” he added.
Additionally, Tsitsipas announced his pledge to donate $1,000 for every ace he serves during the tournament this year.
“I will be donating $1,000 for every ace I hit this week in Acapulco. The proceeds will go towards relief efforts for Acapulco in 2024,” he affirmed.
