Alex Telles has unveiled the pivotal role Cristiano Ronaldo played in his decision to make a significant move to Al-Nassr in the Saudi Pro League last summer.
Their paths crossed at Manchester United in 2021. However, by the close of 2022, Ronaldo grew disillusioned with life at Old Trafford under manager Erik ten Hag. In a candid interview with journalist Piers Morgan, he publicly criticized the club, and the manager, and unveiled behind-the-scenes turmoil.
This turmoil ultimately led to his contract termination, prompting Cristiano Ronaldo to opt for a transfer to Al-Nassr in Saudi Arabia in 2023. Half a year later, Alex Telles followed suit, departing Manchester United to join the Portuguese icon at Al-Nassr.
In an interview with Sapo Desporto, Telles shed light on Ronaldo’s significant role in his decision to relocate to the Middle East. Telles expressed (via GOAL):
“Cristiano Ronaldo played a crucial role in my decision to come here. We had exchanged messages prior. My agent was also involved. But undoubtedly, Cristiano Ronaldo’s legendary status made my decision easier.”
He further elaborated:
“We had extensive conversations. He provided insights into the club and expressed anticipation for my arrival. I am delighted to have someone like him, both as a player and a person, alongside me. His dedication motivated me to join Al-Nassr. Therefore, every effort I make is not just for myself but also for him, for Al-Nassr, and all the players here.”
Telles also lauded Ronaldo’s leadership attributes:
“He possesses natural captaincy qualities and leadership skills. His professionalism and positive outlook have had a profound impact on the team. He never allows us to give up and consistently encourages us to strive for excellence. He sets a positive example for us all and is highly influential within the team.
