Chris Mortensen, a pioneering figure in NFL journalism whose insights shaped the knowledge of countless football enthusiasts over the years, has passed away at the age of 72.
Following a distinguished career in newspapers, notably at the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Mortensen joined ESPN, where he became renowned for his work on the network’s NFL studio shows and earned a reputation as one of the league’s foremost news breakers.
In 2016, Mortensen revealed his decision to reduce his workload after being diagnosed with throat cancer.
“Mort was widely respected as an industry pioneer and universally beloved as a supportive, hard-working teammate,” said ESPN Chairman Jimmy Pitaro in a statement.
“He covered the NFL with extraordinary skill and passion and was at the top of his field for decades. He will truly be missed by colleagues and fans, and our hearts and thoughts are with his loved ones.”
Throughout his career, Mortensen wielded significant influence in NFL media circles, leaving an indelible mark on colleagues and audiences alike with his exceptional contributions to the field.
