If you can’t beat them, recruit them. This seems to be the mindset the 49ers were entertaining after parting ways with defensive coordinator Steve Wilks.
According to Taylor Wirth of NBC Sports Bay Area, ESPN’s Dan Graziano recently revealed that the 49ers were exploring the possibility of enticing Steve Spagnuolo away from the Chiefs.
Spagnuolo, whose contract was nearing its end, had the freedom to choose his next destination. Ultimately, he decided to extend his tenure with the Chiefs.
The Chiefs, under Spagnuolo’s leadership on defense, have emerged victorious over the 49ers in two of the last five Super Bowls, namely LIV and LVIII.
Although Coach Kyle Shanahan appeared to favor sticking with the Seattle/Cover 3 defensive strategy, reports suggest he would have been willing to make an exception if it meant acquiring Spagnuolo from the Chiefs.
Spagnuolo has demonstrated his ability to devise exceptional defensive game plans, particularly in Super Bowl matchups. His potential addition to the 49ers’ coaching staff could have provided a significant advantage, especially if they were to face the Chiefs again in the NFL Championship game.
Having served as the Chiefs’ defensive coordinator since 2019, Spagnuolo boasts a deep understanding of how to formulate strategies to contain the formidable Patrick Mahomes.
Following a hiatus from football in 2018, Spagnuolo stepped in to replace Bob Sutton in 2019. His impressive track record includes three Super Bowl rings, one of which he earned in 2007 by orchestrating the New York Giants’ historic upset over the Patriots in Super Bowl XLII, preventing them from completing a perfect 19-0 season.
