Linebacker Eric Kendricks has been released by the Los Angeles Chargers, a strategic move that adds $6.5 million in salary cap space for the team.
Kendricks, who joined the Chargers on a two-year deal last season following an eight-year stint with the Minnesota Vikings, made significant contributions during his time with the team. In 15 games, including 14 starts, he tallied 117 tackles, 3 1/2 sacks, seven tackles for loss, and a forced fumble.
Despite Kendricks’ departure, the Chargers are still facing a significant salary cap challenge, sitting nearly $19 million over the $255.4 million cap limit as free agency approaches.
The team’s new leadership duo of coach Jim Harbaugh and general manager Joe Hortiz inherited a roster with four high-profile players — linebackers Khalil Mack and Joey Bosa, and wide receivers Keenan Allen and Mike Williams — carrying cap numbers exceeding $32 million for the upcoming 2024 season.
Hortiz acknowledged the ongoing evaluation of the roster amidst the salary cap constraints, emphasizing the need for flexibility and a strategic plan in the coming weeks as they navigate the challenges posed by the cap.
