Rafael Nadal has announced his withdrawal from the BNP Paribas Open just before his scheduled first-round match at Indian Wells, citing his inability to perform at the highest level for such a significant event.
In a heartfelt message shared on social media, Nadal expressed his deep fondness for the tournament and his disappointment in not being able to compete.
In his statement posted on Wednesday night, Nadal expressed his affection for Indian Wells, highlighting his early arrival in the desert to prepare diligently for the event. This decision comes despite his dedicated efforts in training and preparation.
The 22-time Grand Slam champion, who has had limited official matches since the 2022 US Open, recently faced a setback with an exhibition loss to fellow Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in The Netflix Slam.
His absence from most of the previous season due to a hip injury, followed by subsequent surgery, has hindered his return to form. Although he briefly returned to action in early January, a muscle tear near his hip forced him to sit out the Australian Open and remain off the tour since then.
It is with great sadness that I have to withdraw from this amazing tournament at Indian Wells.
Everyone knows how much I love this place and how much I love to play here. That’s also one of the reasons why I came very early to the desert to practice and try to get ready. pic.twitter.com/gmvs5kfGO2— Rafa Nadal (@RafaelNadal) March 7, 2024
Acknowledging the difficulty of his decision, Nadal emphasized his inability to deceive himself or his countless fans about his readiness for such a crucial tournament. Despite his withdrawal, he expressed his regret at missing the opportunity to compete and wished the event success.
Having arrived in California well in advance of the tournament and even participating in an exhibition match in Las Vegas against Alcaraz, Nadal’s absence from Indian Wells is a significant disappointment for both organizers and fans.
Tommy Haas, the tournament director, conveyed disappointment over Nadal’s withdrawal while expressing hope for his swift recovery and future participation in Indian Wells.
In the tournament’s draw, Nadal was replaced by lucky loser Sumit Nagal, who will now face Milos Raonic in the upcoming match.
