Austin Ekeler has finally embraced the freedom of free agency and secured a new home.
The seasoned Chargers running back has inked a two-year deal with the Washington Commanders valued at up to $11.43 million, as reported by NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero. Ekeler’s departure seemed inevitable around this time last year.
He expressed frustration with the Chargers’ reluctance to engage in talks for a long-term extension, sought permission to explore trade options, encountered a stagnant running back market, and eventually settled for a revised contract with added incentives.
With changes unfolding within the Los Angeles organization and Ekeler nearing his 29th birthday, the timing was ripe for him to explore opportunities elsewhere. Washington emerged as his destination, offering a platform where he could complement starter Brian Robinson as a pass-catching option.
While Ekeler’s earnings won’t surpass what he made in his final season with the Chargers he stands to earn less, even if he hits all incentives – this move still represents a favorable outcome for a running back who has accumulated 69 total touchdowns over seven seasons.
Positioned at 89th on Gregg Rosenthal’s Top 101 free agents list, Ekeler’s ranking reflects his transition from the explosive three-down threat he once was to a player who excels primarily as a pass-catcher.
The fit in Washington is ideal, as the Commanders embark on a new era under coach Dan Quinn and offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury. Ekeler’s veteran presence will undoubtedly benefit a team in need of seasoned winners. At the same time, he continues to earn a respectable salary in a position group that isn’t commanding astronomical figures in today’s NFL landscape.
