The Carolina Panthers addressed a crucial need for quarterback Bryce Young by acquiring Diontae Johnson from the Pittsburgh Steelers on Tuesday, in exchange for cornerback Donte Jackson.
As part of the deal, the teams will swap later-round picks in this year’s draft, with the Steelers receiving Carolina’s pick at No. 178 and the Panthers getting Pittsburgh’s selection at No. 240, according to a person familiar with the agreement who spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity as the deal has not been officially announced.
Johnson, 28, brings a wealth of experience to Carolina, having recorded 391 receptions for 4,363 yards and 25 touchdowns over five seasons with the Steelers. He enters the final year of a two-year extension signed in August 2022 and is set to earn $10 million this season, including a $3 million roster bonus due later this week.
A Pro Bowler in 2021, Johnson’s elite route-running abilities make him a valuable asset for Young and the Panthers.
Carolina struggled in the passing game last season, finishing last in the league in passing yards during a challenging 2-15 campaign. With Johnson joining the roster, the Panthers hope to bolster their receiving corps, which previously relied heavily on Adam Thielen as the primary target.
Although Johnson’s production dipped slightly last season due to a hamstring injury that limited him to 13 games and a career-low 51 receptions, his addition provides a significant boost to Carolina’s offensive firepower.
The emergence of George Pickens as a downfield threat for the Steelers made Johnson expendable in Pittsburgh, especially after the release of Allen Robinson II last week.
Meanwhile, the Steelers addressed their need in the secondary by acquiring the 28-year-old Jackson, who brings considerable experience with 76 starts over six seasons with the Panthers. Despite not recording an interception last season, Jackson’s track record of 14 career interceptions adds depth and veteran leadership to Pittsburgh’s defensive backfield, alongside standout rookie Joey Porter Jr.
