Alexa Grasso has raised concerns over a scoring error that marred her rematch against Valentina Shevchenko, resulting in the bout being declared a split draw. Their electrifying showdown took place at UFC 285 in March 2023, where Grasso emerged victorious with a submission finish at 4:34 of the fourth round, securing the UFC flyweight championship.
However, their paths crossed again at Noche UFC in September of the same year, leading to a contentious split-draw verdict. Despite all three judges scoring the first three rounds 29-28 in favor of Shevchenko, discrepancies arose in the scoring of rounds four and five.
Michael Bell and Sal D’Amato scored round four 10-9 for Shevchenko, while Junichiro Kamijo dissented. In round five, Grasso unanimously dominated, yet Bell’s scoring was notably atypical with a 10-8 rather than the conventional 10-9.
Expressing her disappointment, Grasso highlighted a scoring mistake that marred the integrity of their rematch. Speaking with Shakiel Mahjouri of CBS Sports, Grasso lamented the unfortunate incident, revealing a judge’s post-fight admission of confusion.
She emphasized her commitment to delivering a definitive conclusion in their next encounter, determined to avoid leaving the outcome in the hands of judges.
Grasso shed light on a pivotal moment in round four involving knee strikes, which was subject to scrutiny between rounds due to a technical issue. However, the review occurred after the judges had submitted their scores, leading to a critical oversight in the scoring process.
Despite the subsequent acknowledgment of the legality of the strikes, the damage had been done, leaving Grasso disheartened by the outcome.
Looking ahead, UFC CEO Dana White announced Grasso and Shevchenko’s involvement as opposing coaches on The Ultimate Fighter 32, slated to premiere on Tuesday, June 4th. Following their coaching roles, the stage is set for a highly anticipated trilogy clash for the flyweight title, although details regarding the date and location remain pending.
