Sam Howell is headed to the Seattle Seahawks, a strategic move that bolsters their quarterback lineup with a seasoned player alongside starter Geno Smith and enhances the draft prospects for the Washington Commanders.
In a trade finalized Thursday and announced by both teams, pending a physical, Seattle acquires Howell along with fourth- and sixth-round picks from Washington in exchange for third- and fifth-round selections.
Howell welcomes a fresh start after a challenging season where he led the NFL in interceptions and endured the most sacks. With this trade, he transitions to a new environment, aiming to make a positive impact.
The picks involved in the trade include No. 102 and 179 going to the Seahawks, and No. 78 and 152 heading to the Commanders. This exchange provides Washington with six selections within the top 100, granting ample opportunities for newly appointed general manager Adam Peters to fortify the roster across various positions, from left tackle to cornerback.
During the 2023 season, Howell held the reins for all 17 games with the Commanders, grappling with 21 interceptions and a league-leading 65 sacks due to injuries and subpar performance from the offensive line. In response, Peters has initiated changes, releasing two starters and bringing in potential replacements.
Drafted in the fifth round from UNC in 2022, Howell joins the Seahawks, whose sturdy offensive line allowed only 38 sacks last season. He steps into the backup role behind Smith following Drew Lock’s departure to the New York Giants.
Washington’s decision to part ways with Howell came as no surprise, especially after signing seasoned backup Marcus Mariota. With the No. 2 pick in the draft, the team remains open to selecting their quarterback of the future, potentially targeting North Carolina’s Drake Maye or LSU’s Heisman Trophy winner, Jayden Daniels.
