The Browns are taking the hard-earned lessons from last season’s quarterback challenges to heart. On Sunday, Cleveland reached an agreement on a one-year contract with former Baltimore Ravens quarterback Tyler Huntley, bolstering their depth and security behind Deshaun Watson.
Huntley will join the Browns on a deal at the veteran’s minimum salary, as the team aims to fortify their quarterback roster after a tumultuous season where Watson’s shoulder injury necessitated multiple changes under center, culminating in surgery after just six starts.
During this period, the Browns turned to P.J. Walker, rookie Dorian Thompson-Robinson, and Joe Flacco, who was brought in as a free agent in November and contributed to Cleveland securing a playoff berth.
Last week, the team secured the services of Jameis Winston, the top overall pick in the 2015 draft, to serve as Watson’s backup. Watson, who has been rehabilitating in California since his surgery in November, now has Winston, Thompson-Robinson, and Huntley in support.
As of now, Flacco remains unsigned.
Huntley, aged 26, served as Lamar Jackson’s primary backup for the past three seasons. He accumulated a 3-7 record in 10 starts for Baltimore, including a playoff loss in the 2022 season where he was thrust into action due to Jackson’s injury.
Notably, Huntley’s fumble near the goal line was returned 98 yards for a game-winning touchdown by Cincinnati’s Sam Hubbard.
In his regular-season appearances, Huntley has thrown for 1,957 yards with eight touchdowns and seven interceptions across 20 games.
