Shane Bieber led the Cleveland Guardians to an 8-0 victory over the Oakland Athletics on Thursday night. Bieber, a former Cy Young Award winner, struck out 11 batters in six scoreless innings. David Fry contributed with three hits, while Stephen Vogt secured his first win as the Guardians’ manager in his debut game.
Bieber, who has started every opening day for the past five seasons, allowed only four hits during his dominant performance. Vogt, a former player for the Athletics, expressed his excitement after securing his first win as a manager.
The Guardians took a commanding lead by scoring five runs in the fourth inning, forcing A’s starter Alex Wood out of the game.
Despite Wood’s efforts, allowing six runs in 3 1/3 innings, the A’s manager Mark Kotsay acknowledged that Wood faced some tough luck during the game.
The attendance at the A’s home opener was lower than in previous years, with many fans participating in a boycott outside the stadium to protest the team’s potential move to Las Vegas.
