Former United States men’s national team (USMNT) captain Landon Donovan has intensified his criticism of Christian Pulisic, claiming that frustration with the American star extends beyond fans and media to include teammates, coaches, staff, and even sponsors.
The criticism began after the USMNT’s World Cup elimination to Belgium, when Pulisic left the match with a sprained ankle. Speaking as a Fox Sports analyst, Donovan questioned the decision, saying that if he had been in the same situation during an elimination game, he would have needed to be “dragged off the field” rather than voluntarily coming out.
The remarks sparked widespread debate and further fueled a long-running disagreement between two of the most recognizable figures in American soccer.
Donovan Says Pulisic’s Inner Circle Creates Growing Frustration Across U.S. Soccer and Beyond
Speaking on his Unfiltered Soccer podcast, Donovan expanded on his comments, revealing that he has spoken with people connected to U.S. Soccer, including coaches, staff members, sponsors, and players. According to Donovan, many are frustrated with how matters surrounding Pulisic are handled.
While Donovan clarified that his criticism is not directed solely at Pulisic, he pointed to the influence of the winger’s agents, family members, and close associates. He alleged that those around Pulisic often treat people poorly, decline media requests, and make the player largely inaccessible, creating tension within the national team environment.

Drawing from his own playing career, Donovan compared Pulisic’s current situation to his struggles after the 2006 World Cup. He recalled seeking therapy to improve his mindset and believes Pulisic should take greater control of his career by having more direct conversations with his representatives, reducing commercial commitments, and improving his media relations. Donovan admitted he also made mistakes during his career and said media training helped him become a better leader.
Donovan Admits Strained Relationship With Pulisic as Criticism Sparks Fresh Leadership Debate Nationwide
The strained relationship between Donovan and Pulisic is not new. Last year, Donovan criticized the AC Milan forward after he chose to skip the Concacaf Gold Cup to recover during the club’s offseason instead of joining the national team under new head coach Mauricio Pochettino. Donovan argued that the decision prevented Pulisic from building chemistry with teammates and the coaching staff ahead of the World Cup.
Donovan acknowledged that he and Pulisic “don’t have a great relationship” and believes the current USMNT captain neither likes nor respects him.
Although Donovan’s own career included controversy, most notably his sabbatical before being omitted from the 2014 World Cup squad, his longstanding ties to U.S. Soccer and current role as a broadcaster give weight to his claims. His comments have reignited debate over Pulisic’s leadership, availability, and the influence of those around him following the national team’s disappointing World Cup campaign.
