Mookie Betts made history for the Dodgers by hitting his 29th leadoff home run, breaking the record with a hit off Zack Thompson in a 6-3 victory against the St. Louis Cardinals on Friday night.
After being traded from the Boston Red Sox, Betts surpassed Davey Lopes, who held the record from 1972 to 1981.
Betts now stands alone in fifth place on the list of major league leadoff home runs with 49, overtaking Ian Kinsler.
He trails behind Rickey Henderson (81), George Springer (57), Alfonso Soriano (54), and Craig Biggio (53).
Betts’ hit to left field mirrored his performance from Thursday’s game, marking his third consecutive game with a home run.
As a seven-time All-Star and the 2018 AL MVP, Betts has accumulated 255 home runs over his 11-year career.
