The dynamic of the 2024 NFL draft’s quarterback prospects has notably changed, now featuring Michigan’s J.J. McCarthy alongside the previously prominent trio known as the “Big Three.”
Once primarily heralded as the trio of quarterbacks dominating draft discussions—USC’s Caleb Williams, LSU’s Jayden Daniels, and North Carolina’s Drake Maye—this narrative has expanded to include McCarthy, according to insights from ESPN’s Matt Miller.
Miller’s sources reveal a reevaluation among multiple NFL teams, now ranking McCarthy ahead of Maye. Highlighted are McCarthy’s attributes, including a distinguished winning record, his potential as a mobile quarterback, and remarkable composure in high-pressure situations.
In line with this perspective, ESPN’s Field Yates observes a transformation in the quarterback hierarchy, now acknowledging a consensus top four that includes McCarthy. However, Yates advises caution, noting the apparent intention of the Chicago Bears to prioritize Williams as the first overall pick, pending any unforeseen developments.
McCarthy’s collegiate journey at Michigan has been nothing short of impressive. Over two seasons as a starter, he amassed a stellar 27-1 record, securing two Big Ten titles and steering his team to two College Football Playoff appearances. Notably, he played a pivotal role in Michigan’s perfect 15-0 season, culminating in a national championship victory.
Despite Michigan’s run-first offensive approach, McCarthy’s performance remained notable. He completed an impressive 72.3 percent of his passes, tallying 2,991 yards, 22 touchdowns, and a mere four interceptions. Additionally, his contributions on the ground, amassing 202 rushing yards and three touchdowns, underscored his versatility.
Maye, also a two-year starter, experienced a slight decline in production during his tenure at North Carolina. Following a standout 2022 campaign where he earned ACC Player of the Year honors, Maye’s output dipped marginally in 2023.
While Maye showcased his prowess with 4,321 passing yards, 38 touchdowns, and seven interceptions in 2022, his numbers slightly regressed the following year. Nevertheless, he remained a force on the field, demonstrating resilience with 3,608 passing yards, 24 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 2023.
A notable distinction arises in their participation in the NFL Scouting Combine. McCarthy’s decision to engage in on-field drills set him apart as the premier quarterback prospect present. This move potentially bolstered his standing among NFL teams evaluating their draft options.
Looking ahead, the draft landscape hints at a scenario where quarterbacks could command the top three picks. Teams like the Chicago Bears, Washington Commanders, and New England Patriots are in dire need of securing a franchise quarterback, setting the stage for potential early selections.
