Jared Jones, a 22-year-old right-handed pitcher, struck out 10 batters in his first major league game, helping the Pittsburgh Pirates secure a 9-3 win against the Miami Marlins on Saturday.

Jones, chosen by Pittsburgh in the 2020 amateur draft, allowed three runs, three hits, and two walks in 5 2/3 innings. He threw 62 of 89 pitches for strikes and credited his success to catcher Henry Davis.

“He made some big plays,” Jones said. “I just focused on throwing the ball where he could catch it.” Jones, who reached a fastball speed of 99.9 mph, earned his spot on the opening-day roster after performing well in spring training.

Connor Joe, with two doubles and a single, contributed to the Pirates’ offensive effort with two RBIs. The team capitalized on opportunities, scoring seven runs after two outs and continuing to reach base throughout the game.

Miami’s Luis Arraez broke his hitless streak with a single in the seventh inning. Marlins’ starter Ryan Weathers struggled, giving up three runs, seven hits, and two walks in four innings.

The Pirates’ bullpen, including All-Star closer David Bednar, held the Marlins to just five hits for the game.
