Following a narrow 117-113 victory at Frost Bank Center on Sunday evening, Warriors standout Draymond Green shared a lighthearted sentiment, wishing his younger teammates luck when they face San Antonio Spurs rookie Victor Wembanyama in the future.
Addressing the media in a postgame press conference, Green elaborated on the challenges posed by Wembanyama’s formidable combination of size and athleticism.
Reflecting on a pivotal play towards the end of the game, wherein he endeavored to secure a rebound against the Spurs’ imposing rookie, Green expressed amusement at the prospect of not having to contend with Wembanyama for much longer.
“I thought I executed a solid box-out, but he still managed to snatch the rebound,” remarked Green. “He’s truly a remarkable talent. I was just joking with Trayce [Jackson-Davis] and the others that I’m grateful for the chance to compete against him now because they’ll undoubtedly have their hands full with him down the line, whereas I’ll have retired from the league by then, so that’s a win for me.”
Wembanyama emerged as one of the most highly anticipated NBA prospects in recent memory ahead of the 2023 NBA Draft, and thus far, he has not disappointed in his rookie season. With an imposing stature, expansive wingspan, and exceptional athleticism, the Spurs’ rookie has swiftly established himself as a force to be reckoned with.
In the showdown against the Warriors on Sunday night, Wembanyama showcased his dominance on the court, tallying 32 points and snatching nine rebounds, including a fourth-quarter scoring surge that narrowed Golden State’s lead to a mere two points in the waning moments of the game.
Meanwhile, Green delivered a stellar all-around performance, contributing 21 points, six rebounds, 11 assists, six steals, and a block, thereby playing a pivotal role in propelling the Warriors to their fourth consecutive victory, ensuring they maintain their grip on the final Western Conference play-in berth ahead of the Houston Rockets.
