The Athletics picked up infielder Tyler Nevin, the son of former Los Angeles Angels manager Phil Nevin, from the Baltimore Orioles via waivers on Sunday.
Nevin, who is 26 years old, has played in the majors for three seasons with the Orioles and Detroit Tigers, batting .203 with five home runs and 29 RBIs in 105 at-bats. He returned to the Orioles in January but was designated for assignment on Thursday.
With the A’s, Nevin might get a chance to contribute, especially since the team struggled last season. He bats right-handed and can play multiple positions, including outfield, first base, and third base.
To make room for Nevin, the Athletics designated right-handed pitcher Adrián Martínez for assignment. Martínez, 27, posted a 4.75 ERA in 22 appearances last year, primarily as a reliever. He also made 12 starts in 2022, recording a 6.24 ERA.
Nevin was drafted in the first round by the Colorado Rockies in 2015 and was traded to the Orioles in 2020. He made his MLB debut in 2021.
His father, Phil Nevin, had a successful 12-year MLB career, playing for seven different teams and earning an All-Star selection in 2001 with the San Diego Padres. Phil also managed the Angels from 2022 to 2023, initially as an interim manager, before being replaced after the team missed the playoffs.
