The Chiefs have reached an agreement to retain running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire for another year, as confirmed by a reliable source.
This decision adds depth to the Chiefs’ running back corps, complementing starter Isiah Pacheco. Interestingly, this development coincides with the team’s hosting of free agent running back J.K. Dobbins on a visit.
Since being drafted in the first round in 2020, Edwards-Helaire’s journey with the Chiefs has been marked by highs and lows. Despite a promising start, injuries hindered his progress in his initial seasons. However, he managed to complete the entirety of the 2023 season, albeit as a backup to Pacheco, who assumed the starting role in 2022.
Last season culminated in a Super Bowl LVIII victory for the Chiefs, with Edwards-Helaire contributing 223 rushing yards throughout the campaign. Notably, his rookie year saw him lead the team in rushing with 803 yards. However, injuries during the latter part of that season limited his effectiveness during the playoffs and the subsequent Super Bowl loss to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
The 24-year-old running back faced challenges in subsequent seasons, missing games due to various injuries. Despite setbacks, he showcased resilience, recording 517 rushing yards in 2021 and 302 in 2022, respectively. Over his four-year tenure, Edwards-Helaire has accumulated 1,845 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns, with an additional 765 receiving yards and seven touchdowns from 89 receptions.
