Newcastle’s hopes of reaching European soccer next season took a hit when Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s late penalty helped Everton secure a 1-1 draw in the Premier League on Tuesday. Alexander Isak gave Newcastle the lead with a goal in the 15th minute at St James’ Park.
Despite Newcastle’s dominance for much of the game, two VAR decisions in the second half played a crucial role as Everton managed to earn a crucial point in their battle against relegation.
First, VAR disallowed a goal from Dan Burn, which would have extended Newcastle’s lead to 2-0.
Then, it detected a foul by substitute Paul Dummett on Ashley Young in the penalty area. After reviewing the footage on the sideline monitor, referee Tony Harrington awarded Everton a penalty.
Calvert-Lewin, who had not scored since October 29, converted the penalty in the 88th minute, leveling the score and helping Everton move further away from the relegation zone.
Isak’s goal marked his 19th of the season in all competitions.
