Stefon Diggs may have left, but his impact remains. It’s hard to overlook his departure, especially with the hefty $31 million dead-money hit on the Buffalo Bills’ salary cap for 2024.
By trading him before June 1, the Bills will absorb the full charge this year instead of spreading it out. Waiting a bit longer would have made it easier to manage the cap, especially with the draft approaching.
If Diggs was still on the roster in a few weeks, it might not have been so obvious that the Bills were in the market for a receiver. Now, teams behind them might try to jump ahead in the draft to snatch the receiver they think the Bills want.
Perhaps the Texans preferred to make the trade now to have Diggs for the entire offseason program. If the Bills had no better options and risked losing the deal, they had no other option but to proceed now.
